Feminist activist and former First Lady of Ekiti State, Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, has called for a new foundational document for the global women's movement. In a recent opinion piece, she argued that while historical texts like the 1848 Seneca Falls Declaration remain important, they are insufficient to address modern challenges such as digital violence, climate change, and political backlash against gender equality.
Adeleye-Fayemi, a co-founder of the African Women's Development Fund, emphasized that the new 'letter' must be inclusive and reflect the diverse realities of women across different regions, particularly in the Global South. She highlighted the need for frameworks that tackle intersecting issues of poverty, conflict, and disability.
The call aligns with ongoing discussions about revitalizing feminist organizing ahead of the 30-year review of the Beijing Platform for Action. Experts note that while the core demands for rights and justice remain, the strategies and coalitions must evolve to counter well-funded opposition movements and harness new technologies for advocacy.
