The Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese, Rt Rev. Reuben Kisembo, has commended the Government of Uganda for introducing a new lower secondary school curriculum. He described the reform as timely for equipping learners with practical skills.

The curriculum shift, known as the Lower Secondary Curriculum, was rolled out nationally in 2020. It moves away from a purely theoretical approach to a competency-based model, focusing on hands-on skills in subjects like entrepreneurship and information technology.

While praised by some educators and religious leaders like Bishop Kisembo for its potential to address youth unemployment, the implementation has faced challenges. Reports have cited issues such as inadequate teacher training, a lack of necessary instructional materials, and concerns over continuous assessment.

The government, through the National Curriculum Development Centre, maintains that the curriculum is a crucial step towards aligning education with the needs of the labor market and national development goals.
