Bangkok's Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced on May 18, 2026, that all public schools under its jurisdiction will implement a ban on mobile phone use in classrooms starting in June 2026. The policy aims to reduce distractions and improve student learning outcomes.
According to the BMA, students will be required to keep their phones in their bags or lockers during class time. Exceptions will be made for educational purposes with teacher permission or for students with medical needs. The decision follows a pilot program in several schools that showed improved academic performance and reduced cyberbullying incidents.
The ban applies to all 437 public schools in Bangkok, affecting over 350,000 students. Similar measures have been adopted in other countries, including France and parts of Australia, where studies have shown reduced screen time leads to better concentration and social interaction among students.
