BANDUNG, Indonesia — The Bandung City Government has failed to find a new manager for Bandung Zoo, also known as Kebun Binatang Bandung, as of May 2026. This has led to concerns about the welfare of approximately 700 animals in the zoo's collection, including endangered species like the Sumatran tiger and orangutans.
According to local officials, the lack of a manager has disrupted the supply of animal feed and other essential operations. The zoo, which opened in 1933, has been struggling with financial and management issues for years, leading to previous closures and public criticism over animal care conditions.
In response, the Bandung City Government is considering relocating the animals to other accredited zoos or sanctuaries in Indonesia. However, no final decision has been made, and the search for a new manager continues. The zoo remains open to visitors, but animal welfare advocates have called for urgent action to ensure the animals' well-being.
