On Friday, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced that the neo-Nazi group 'White Australia', formerly known as the National Socialist Network (NSN), has been listed as a terrorist organization under Australian hate laws. This designation makes it illegal to support the group in any way, including funding, recruitment, or promotion.
The ban follows a review by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), which identified the group as a threat to national security due to its extremist ideology and history of violence. The group has been linked to several incidents, including a 2024 plot to attack a synagogue in Melbourne.
Under the new listing, individuals found to be members or supporters of 'White Australia' face up to 25 years in prison. The government has also frozen the group's assets and banned its symbols.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the ban sends a clear message that Australia will not tolerate hate and extremism. 'There is no place in Australia for neo-Nazis or anyone who promotes violence and division,' he said.
The move has been praised by Jewish community leaders and anti-racism groups, who have long called for stronger action against far-right extremism. The listing is part of a broader government strategy to combat terrorism and hate speech.
