Apple is reportedly working on technology that would allow it to significantly reduce the size of the Dynamic Island cutout on future iPhone Pro models. According to industry analysts and supply chain sources, the plan involves moving key Face ID components, such as the proximity sensor, under the display.
The Dynamic Island, which debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, houses the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors. While it has been praised for its interactive software features, its physical size has remained a design constraint. Moving components like the proximity sensor beneath the screen is seen as a key step toward a future with a completely uninterrupted display.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and display industry consultant Ross Young have both indicated that Apple is actively developing under-display Face ID technology. However, a full implementation where both the camera and all sensors are hidden is not expected until 2027 at the earliest. A smaller Dynamic Island could be an intermediate step.
These reports align with Apple's long-term design philosophy of minimizing hardware intrusions. The company has progressively reduced the screen notch since its introduction with the iPhone X in 2017, evolving it into the pill-shaped Dynamic Island. No official comment has been provided by Apple on these specific plans for future models.
