Al-Âla, the classical Andalusian music tradition of Morocco, is experiencing a notable resurgence. Concerts, both private and public, have multiplied, and regional and national festivals are now firmly established in the cultural calendar. This revival is driven by numerous associations dedicated to preserving and promoting this centuries-old art form.
The term "al-Âla" refers to the classical music repertoire that originated in medieval Andalusia (modern-day Spain) and was brought to Morocco by Muslim and Jewish refugees after the Reconquista. It is characterized by its complex modal system, poetic texts in classical Arabic, and orchestral arrangement featuring instruments like the oud, rebab, and violin.
In Morocco, al-Âla is particularly associated with the cities of Fes, Meknes, Tetouan, and Chefchaouen, where distinct regional styles have developed. The Moroccan government has recognized the importance of this heritage, and in 2023, the Ministry of Culture launched a program to support the teaching and transmission of al-Âla, including the creation of a national institute for Andalusian music.
The revival is also supported by international recognition. In 2022, UNESCO inscribed "Al-Aita, a popular art form" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, though al-Âla itself is not yet listed. However, efforts are underway to nominate al-Âla for UNESCO recognition, reflecting its cultural significance.
Despite the challenges of modernization and changing musical tastes, the al-Âla tradition continues to thrive, thanks to the dedication of musicians, teachers, and cultural associations.
