Archaeologists in Morocco have made a significant discovery at the site of Zilil, an ancient city that has been buried for over 2,500 years. The excavation, led by a team of Moroccan and international researchers, has uncovered well-preserved structures, artifacts, and inscriptions that shed light on the region's pre-Roman history.
Zilil, located near Asilah in northern Morocco, was an important settlement during the Phoenician and Carthaginian periods. The recent findings include remnants of defensive walls, residential buildings, and pottery that date back to the 6th century BCE, according to the Moroccan Ministry of Culture.
The discovery is expected to enhance understanding of the cultural and economic exchanges between North Africa and the Mediterranean world. Researchers have also found evidence of trade connections with ancient Greece and Egypt, as indicated by imported ceramics and amulets.
