A new regional emergency services authority has been officially formed in the Alle-Kiski Valley of Pennsylvania to address a systemic crisis in local fire and EMS coverage. The Alle-Kiski Emergency Service Authority (AKESA) was created by the boards of supervisors for Allegheny Township and Gilpin Township in late 2025, following the collapse of several local volunteer departments.

The authority is designed to provide a stable, funded model for emergency response, replacing a failing system reliant on dwindling volunteers. Its formation was driven by critical coverage gaps that left some areas without reliable service, posing a significant public safety risk.

AKESA is now in the process of hiring paid personnel and acquiring equipment, with the goal of becoming fully operational. The model is being watched by other municipalities in Western Pennsylvania facing similar struggles with unsustainable volunteer models.
