Algeria has solidified its position as a key natural gas supplier to Europe in the wake of the continent's efforts to diversify away from Russian energy. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, European nations have sought alternative sources, with Algeria emerging as a major beneficiary. State-owned energy company Sonatrach has signed several supply agreements with European partners, including Italy, to increase pipeline gas deliveries.

In 2023, Algeria became the European Union's third-largest pipeline gas supplier, after Norway and Russia, according to Eurostat data. The country primarily exports via the Trans-Mediterranean Pipeline to Italy and the Medgaz pipeline to Spain. While exports have risen significantly from 2021 levels, Algeria faces challenges in boosting production further due to aging infrastructure and high domestic consumption.

Algeria's role in West Africa remains more limited, primarily focused on supplying neighboring countries like Tunisia and Morocco via small-scale pipelines. While it holds the tenth-largest proven gas reserves globally, its potential as a major exporter to sub-Saharan Africa is constrained by a lack of regional pipeline infrastructure and competing domestic priorities.

The country's strategic importance to Europe is likely to persist in the medium term as the EU continues its energy transition. However, long-term demand for Algerian gas in Europe is uncertain due to the bloc's ambitious renewable energy and decarbonization goals.
