Algeria has reiterated its position on the Western Sahara dispute, emphasizing the need for a political solution based on United Nations resolutions. The Algerian Foreign Ministry stated on May 28, 2026, that any settlement must include a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people, as outlined in the 1991 UN peace plan.
The statement came during a meeting between Algerian officials and the UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who is currently touring the region to revive stalled negotiations. Algeria, a key backer of the Polisario Front, has long called for a process that ensures the rights of the Sahrawi people, while Morocco proposes autonomy under its sovereignty.
The UN has described the situation as a 'frozen conflict' and continues to push for a mutually acceptable solution. No new negotiations have been scheduled, but de Mistura's visit aims to break the deadlock.
