The Akeyulerre Healing Centre in Alice Springs, Australia, has been awarded the 2026 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International Prize. The centre, which provides culturally appropriate health services to the Arrernte community, was recognized for its architecture that blends traditional Aboriginal knowledge with contemporary design.
Designed by local firm MGAO (Merrin G. A. O'Connell) in collaboration with the Akeyulerre community, the building features a circular layout inspired by traditional Arrernte meeting places. Materials include locally sourced rammed earth and recycled timber, minimizing environmental impact while honoring Indigenous building practices.
The RIBA jury praised the centre for its 'profound connection to place and culture,' noting that the design actively supports the healing mission of the organization. The project was completed in 2024 and has since become a model for culturally sensitive architecture worldwide.
