A recent report from market research firm IDC suggests that 2026 could be a pivotal year for AI PCs, with shipments expected to reach 100 million units globally. This forecast, released on July 14, 2026, highlights growing consumer and enterprise interest in devices with dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) for on-device AI tasks.
The report credits new processors from Intel (Lunar Lake) and AMD (Ryzen AI 300 series) for enabling faster AI workloads like real-time language translation and image generation without cloud dependency. IDC analyst Tom Mainelli noted, 'The AI PC market is transitioning from early adoption to mainstream, driven by tangible productivity gains.'
However, the report warns that software optimization remains a bottleneck. Many applications still lack full support for NPU acceleration, limiting immediate benefits for average users. Pricing also remains a barrier, with most AI PCs costing over $1,000.
Despite these challenges, IDC projects AI PCs will account for 60% of all PC shipments by 2027, as more developers optimize for local AI processing. Major manufacturers like Dell, HP, and Lenovo are expanding their AI PC lineups ahead of the back-to-school season.
