Speakers and presidents of African Senates gathered in Rabat, Morocco, for a conference focused on reinforcing democratic governance and legislative institutions across the continent. The meeting, held under the theme of democracy and peace, brought together parliamentary leaders to discuss shared challenges and cooperation.
The conference, which took place in early April 2026, was organized by the Association of Senates, Shoora and Equivalent Councils in Africa and the Arab World (ASSECAA). Participants emphasized the critical role of upper houses in promoting dialogue, political stability, and sustainable development within their respective nations.
Discussions centered on mechanisms to enhance the effectiveness of parliamentary institutions in conflict prevention and the consolidation of democratic processes. The assembly served as a platform for exchanging expertise and fostering inter-parliamentary partnerships aimed at addressing continental issues.
The conclave concluded with a commitment to continued collaboration among African upper chambers to support constitutional order and peaceful political transitions, recognizing the unique position of senates in mediating and stabilizing national governance.
