As of June 29, 2026, nine of the ten African teams that qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have advanced to the Round of 32, a record achievement for the continent. The only exception is Tunisia, which was eliminated in the group stage after a 1-0 loss to Australia on June 27.
The successful teams include Morocco, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Ivory Coast, and South Africa. Morocco, a semifinalist in 2022, continued its strong form by topping its group with seven points. Senegal also advanced as group winners, while Ghana secured a spot as one of the best third-placed teams.
FIFA data confirms that this is the highest number of African teams to reach the knockout stage in a single World Cup, surpassing the previous record of three in 2014 and 2022. The improved performance has been attributed to increased investment in youth academies and coaching across the continent.
