Police in Kisoro District on Saturday arrested 25 Rwandans and three Ugandans for conducting illegal mining activities at Wolfram Kirwa mines in Kabaya Village, Nyarubuye Sub County, Kigezi region police spokesperson, Mr Elly Maate said on Sunday.

Mr Maate said the suspects were arrested during a joint operation by police and local authorities following reports of unauthorized mining in the area. The operation aimed to curb illegal extraction of minerals, which has been a recurring issue in the region.

The arrested individuals are currently being held at Kisoro Central Police Station pending further investigations. Police have urged the public to report any suspicious mining activities to protect natural resources.
