As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, data analytics firm Opta has identified five African players expected to make a significant impact in the tournament. The list includes established stars and emerging talents from across the continent.
According to Opta's analysis, the five players are: Mohamed Salah (Egypt), Victor Osimhen (Nigeria), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Sadio Mané (Senegal), and Riyad Mahrez (Algeria). These players were selected based on their recent performances in top European leagues and international competitions.
Mohamed Salah, who plays for Liverpool, has been a consistent performer for Egypt, while Victor Osimhen, a striker for Napoli, has emerged as one of Africa's top forwards. Achraf Hakimi, a full-back for Paris Saint-Germain, is known for his speed and defensive skills. Sadio Mané, now with Al Nassr, remains a key player for Senegal, and Riyad Mahrez, who plays for Al Ahli, continues to be a creative force for Algeria.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded format with 48 teams, giving more African nations the opportunity to compete. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
