The 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates commenced today, May 4, 2026, across Ghana. A total of 619,985 final-year junior high school (JHS) students from 20,390 schools are participating in the national assessment.
In addition to domestic candidates, 156 students from neighboring Togo and Benin are also sitting for the exam, according to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). The inclusion of foreign candidates reflects regional educational cooperation.
The examination is scheduled to run over several days, covering core subjects including English, mathematics, integrated science, and social studies. WAEC has implemented strict protocols to ensure the integrity of the process.
