The Vineyard Wind 1 project, the first utility-scale offshore wind farm in the United States, has completed construction. Located 15 miles off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, the project is a joint venture between Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
The installation of the final turbine was completed in late 2025. The project consists of 62 General Electric Haliade-X turbines, each with a capacity of 13 megawatts. When fully operational, the farm will have a total capacity of 806 megawatts, enough to power over 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts.
This milestone marks a significant step for the U.S. offshore wind industry, which has faced economic headwinds including supply chain issues and rising costs. The Biden administration has set a goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
Vineyard Wind 1 began delivering its first power to the New England grid in early 2025. The project is expected to reach full commercial operation in 2026, reducing carbon emissions by over 1.6 million tons per year.
