Israel's Education Ministry has suspended a teacher from his duties after a friend of his spray-painted the colors of the Palestinian flag on a bus stop in the occupied West Bank. The incident occurred at a bus stop near the settlement of Psagot, adjacent to the Palestinian city of Ramallah, in late February 2026.
The teacher, whose identity has not been officially released, was reportedly present when his friend carried out the act. The ministry stated the suspension was due to "severe disciplinary failure" and behavior unbecoming of an educator, pending a hearing. The friend was arrested by Israeli police.
This case has sparked debate within Israel over freedom of expression and the limits imposed on civil servants. Right-wing politicians condemned the act as support for terrorism, while some critics argue the suspension is politically motivated and excessive for an act of non-violent protest.
The graffiti was quickly removed by local authorities. The teacher's suspension comes amid heightened tensions in the West Bank following the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza.
