The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and State Patrol have issued a no-travel advisory for much of southern Minnesota as a significant winter storm continues to impact the region. The advisory, which began on Sunday, March 15, 2026, remains in effect due to blizzard conditions, including heavy snow, strong winds, and near-zero visibility.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), blizzard warnings are active for areas including Mankato, Marshall, and Worthington. Forecasts predict snowfall accumulations of 12 to 18 inches in some areas, coupled with wind gusts exceeding 45 mph, creating dangerous whiteout conditions and making travel extremely hazardous.

MnDOT reports that numerous state highways and interstates, including sections of I-90, are experiencing significant snow cover and drifting. Road conditions are described as difficult to impossible, with many roads impassable. The State Patrol has responded to multiple crashes and vehicles off the road, urging the public to heed the advisory.

Officials emphasize that the no-travel advisory is for public safety. Residents are advised to stay home if possible, and those who must travel are urged to check 511mn.org for the latest road conditions and closures. The storm is expected to gradually taper off later on Monday, March 16.
