The All England Lawn Tennis Club has confirmed that video review technology will be introduced for line calls at The Championships, Wimbledon, starting in 2026. This marks a historic shift for the tournament, which has long maintained a tradition of human line judges.
The system, similar to the Electronic Line Calling (ELC) used at the US Open and Australian Open, will allow players to challenge calls. The technology uses a network of cameras to track the ball's trajectory and determine whether a shot is in or out, with the result displayed on stadium screens.
This move follows a broader trend in tennis to increase accuracy and reduce human error in officiating. The French Open at Roland-Garros remains the only Grand Slam tournament not to have fully adopted electronic line-calling for all courts.
The 2026 Wimbledon Championships are scheduled to be held from June 29 to July 12. The All England Club stated that the decision was made after extensive testing to ensure the technology meets the specific challenges of grass courts.
