The United Nations General Assembly has officially declared 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer. The resolution, adopted in late 2025, aims to recognize and address the unique challenges faced by women in agriculture worldwide.

According to UN data, women comprise over 40% of the agricultural labor force in developing countries, yet they often have less access to land, credit, and technology than their male counterparts. The year-long observance seeks to promote policies that empower women farmers and enhance global food security.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will lead the coordination of activities, focusing on closing the gender gap in agriculture. Initiatives will highlight successful programs and advocate for increased investment in resources for women farmers.

This designation builds upon the UN's Decade of Family Farming (2019-2028) and aims to accelerate progress on Sustainable Development Goals related to gender equality and zero hunger. Member states are encouraged to develop national action plans to support the year's objectives.
