The Puerto Galera municipal government's wastewater treatment program has received commendation from the non-governmental organization Save Philippine Seas. The program, which includes the operation of a centralized sewage treatment plant (STP) in Barangay Sabang, is credited with significantly improving coastal water quality in the popular tourist destination.

Puerto Galera, located in Oriental Mindoro and part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve, has long faced environmental pressures from tourism and development. The STP, operational for several years, treats wastewater from numerous hotels and establishments before discharge, directly addressing pollution sources that previously affected the marine ecosystem.

Local officials report that the initiative has led to measurable improvements in coliform levels and overall water clarity in Sabang Bay. The program is part of a broader municipal environmental code and conservation effort, which also includes strict regulations on new construction and solid waste management.

The recognition from the environmental NGO highlights the project as a model for other coastal municipalities in the Philippines grappling with similar sustainability challenges. Continued operation and maintenance of the treatment infrastructure are cited as key to its long-term success.
