India is turning to Morocco as a key supplier of phosphatic fertilizers for its crucial summer crop season, seeking to ensure food security amid global supply chain uncertainties. This strategic shift comes as traditional trade routes and suppliers face significant pressure.
According to industry reports and trade data, India's imports of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and other fertilizers from Morocco have seen a notable increase. The move is partly driven by India's aim to diversify its sources away from China, which has previously imposed export restrictions on fertilizers, and to mitigate risks from ongoing tensions in the Middle East that affect shipments through the Red Sea.
Morocco, home to the world's largest phosphate reserves, has capitalized on this demand. State-owned OCP Group, a major global fertilizer producer, has been actively supplying the Indian market. Analysts note that this partnership strengthens economic ties between the two nations while addressing India's immediate agricultural needs.
The reliance on Moroccan supplies highlights the broader challenges in the global fertilizer market, where prices and availability remain volatile due to geopolitical conflicts, export controls, and logistical hurdles. For Indian farmers, securing adequate fertilizer ahead of the Kharif (summer) planting season is critical for the production of staples like rice, corn, and cotton.
