Health officials have confirmed 29 cases of meningitis are now linked to an outbreak associated with Club Chemistry, a nightclub in Canterbury. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is leading the investigation into the cluster of invasive meningococcal disease.
Louise Jones-Roberts, the owner of Club Chemistry, stated that two of her staff members are among those hospitalized. In a media interview, she expressed concern, saying "something isn’t making sense" regarding the situation.
The UKHSA has identified the specific strain as meningococcal W (MenW). Public health teams are conducting contact tracing and have advised antibiotics for close contacts of confirmed cases. Vaccination is also being offered to those at risk.
Meningitis is a serious infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms can include a high fever, headache, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, and a rash that does not fade under pressure.
