Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has stated that reopening a debate on the name of Taiwan's representative office in Vilnius could force its closure. He made the remarks on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, according to reports from Lithuanian media outlet LRT.

President Nausėda was quoted saying the issue was settled when the office, named the "Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania," was opened. He argued that revisiting the name now would be counterproductive and could lead to the office being shut down.

The office's opening in 2021 significantly strained Lithuania's relations with China, which views Taiwan as part of its territory. Beijing has consistently opposed any diplomatic recognition of the island.

Nausėda's comments highlight the ongoing diplomatic sensitivity surrounding Taiwan's international representation and Lithuania's attempt to navigate its relations with both Taipei and Beijing.
