The Kenyan government has announced a waiver on all fees for first-time national identity card registration and replacement of lost or damaged cards. The initiative, announced by Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, is aimed at boosting registration, particularly among the youth.

According to official statements, the waiver will remain in effect until December 2027. This move is intended to remove financial barriers for young Kenyans seeking to obtain their crucial identification documents, which are necessary for accessing government services, opening bank accounts, and registering as voters.

Spokesperson Mwaura emphasized that no Kenyan should be charged for these services during the waiver period. The directive follows instructions from President William Ruto's administration to facilitate easier access to identification.

The policy is seen as a significant step to increase the number of registered citizens, with a focus on integrating more young people into formal systems ahead of future electoral processes and civic engagements.
