The Alberta RCMP is marking National Impaired Driving Prevention Week (NIDPW) from March 17 to 23, 2026, with a focus on enforcement and public education during the March school break. The annual campaign, led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), aims to reduce collisions caused by impairment from alcohol, drugs, or fatigue.

Police across the province are conducting check stops and increased patrols. "Impaired driving remains one of the leading criminal causes of death in Canada," said Superintendent Gary Graham of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. "Our officers will be out in full force to keep our roads safe."

Authorities remind drivers that impairment includes cannabis, prescription drugs, and alcohol. Penalties for impaired driving can include immediate license suspension, vehicle seizure, fines, and criminal charges. The RCMP encourages the public to plan for a safe ride home by using a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare service.
