Former Guinea international Kamil Zayatte has shared his thoughts on the draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which took place on January 27, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco. In an exclusive interview, Zayatte highlighted the importance of home support, stating, 'A team is strong when it plays in front of its own public.'
The tournament, originally scheduled for 2025, was postponed to 2026 due to scheduling conflicts and will now be hosted by Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Zayatte, who captained Guinea at the 2006 and 2008 AFCON tournaments, noted that Morocco's familiarity with local conditions could give them a significant edge.
Zayatte also commented on Guinea's group, which includes Egypt, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe. He described it as a 'challenging group' but expressed confidence in Guinea's ability to advance if they maintain focus and discipline. 'We have the talent, but we need to stay organized,' he added.
The draw placed 24 teams into six groups, with Morocco as the top seed in Group A alongside Zambia, Tanzania, and Comoros. Zayatte emphasized that while home advantage is crucial, it does not guarantee success, citing past tournaments where host nations faced early exits.
