On May 7, 2026, during a meeting in Rabat, Zambian Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe reaffirmed his country's support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara region. The statement was made following talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, as reported by the Moroccan state news agency MAP.
Haimbe also praised the initiatives of King Mohammed VI in Africa, particularly the Atlantic African Gas Pipeline project and the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, which aim to enhance regional economic integration. The Zambian minister highlighted the importance of these projects for energy security and development in the continent.
The meeting comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts by Morocco to gain international recognition for its autonomy plan for the Western Sahara, which it considers part of its territory. Zambia's position aligns with a growing number of African countries that have opened consulates in the disputed region.
