Work has begun on a new heritage trail project along the historic city walls of York, England. The initiative, led by City of York Council, aims to enhance the visitor experience and improve accessibility along the 2.5-mile (4 km) medieval structure, which is one of the longest and most complete town walls in England.
The project involves creating new interpretation panels, improving wayfinding signage, and making sections of the wall more accessible. Funding for the initial development phase has been secured, with further investment being sought for implementation. The walls, largely built in the 13th and 14th centuries, are a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a major tourist attraction.
Council officials state the trail will tell the story of York's development from Roman times through the medieval period. The work is being coordinated with conservation bodies, including Historic England, to ensure the protection of the ancient fabric while improving public access and understanding.
