Wyndham Clark surged to a four-shot lead after a weather-disrupted first round of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills on Thursday. The American golfer carded a 3-under-par 67 in windy conditions, taking advantage of the morning wave before winds intensified.
Rory McIlroy opened with a solid 1-under 69, while Scottie Scheffler, aiming to complete the career Grand Slam, shot an even-par 70. Only six players in the morning wave broke par, highlighting the difficulty of the course.
The afternoon wave faced stronger winds, with several players struggling to maintain momentum. The USGA confirmed that play was suspended briefly due to lightning in the area, but all groups completed the round.
Clark, seeking his first major title, credited his putting and course management. 'I stayed patient and took advantage of the calmer conditions early,' he said. McIlroy noted the challenge of Shinnecock Hills, saying, 'You have to accept bogeys and move on.'
The second round is scheduled to begin Friday morning, with Clark teeing off in the afternoon. Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick is 3-over par after a 73.
