Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) has officially announced the signing of Portuguese coach Paulo Sérgio as the club's new head coach, marking the first major move under the newly elected president Ibrahim El Asri. The announcement was made on July 26, 2026, following El Asri's election victory on July 25, 2026.
Paulo Sérgio, 56, previously managed clubs in Portugal, including Vitória de Guimarães and Portimonense, as well as a stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Fayha. He replaces Rui Vitória, who left the club after a disappointing season. The contract is reported to be for two seasons, with an option for a third.
El Asri, who won the presidential election with 68% of the vote, emphasized the need for stability and a clear sporting project. 'Paulo Sérgio brings experience and a winning mentality. We are building for the future,' El Asri stated during the press conference.
The new coach faces the challenge of revitalizing a squad that finished third in the Botola Pro last season, 12 points behind champions AS FAR. Wydad also failed to advance past the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
