Preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates a rise in fatal work injuries in 2024. The agency reported an estimated 5,486 fatal occupational injuries for the year, an increase from the 5,486 fatal injuries reported for 2022, the most recent final data available. The 2024 figure represents a fatal injury rate of 3.5 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers.

Transportation incidents remained the leading cause of fatal workplace injuries, accounting for over a third of all cases. Other major event categories included exposure to harmful substances or environments, and violence and other injuries by persons or animals. The construction and transportation industries continued to see high numbers of fatalities.

The BLS noted that the 2024 data is preliminary and subject to revision. The final report for 2024 is scheduled for release in late 2026. The increase highlights ongoing safety challenges in high-risk sectors despite existing regulations and safety protocols.
