A woman is described as "very lucky" to have escaped unharmed after a fire sparked by an electric bike battery spread to her home. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at a property in the UK. Firefighters from multiple crews were required to extinguish the blaze, which caused significant damage to the ground floor of the home.
Investigators confirmed the fire originated from the lithium-ion battery of an e-bike that was being charged inside the property. Such batteries can enter a dangerous state called "thermal runaway," leading to intense, fast-spreading fires that are difficult to extinguish. The resident was alerted by smoke alarms and was able to evacuate safely.
This incident adds to a growing number of fires linked to e-bikes and e-scooters, prompting safety warnings from fire services. Officials urge the public to use only manufacturer-approved chargers, avoid charging batteries overnight or when unattended, and never block escape routes with the devices. Damaged batteries should be replaced immediately.
