The World Food Programme (WFP) has unveiled a new country strategy for Morocco aimed at reducing inequalities and addressing the "two-speed Morocco" phenomenon, where urban areas prosper while rural regions lag behind. The plan, announced on August 22, 2026, focuses on strengthening social protection and building resilience among vulnerable populations.
According to the WFP, the strategy aligns with Morocco's national development priorities, including the generalization of social protection and the promotion of sustainable agriculture. The program will target remote and marginalized communities, particularly in the Atlas Mountains and southern oases, where food insecurity and malnutrition rates remain higher than the national average.
The WFP's approach includes supporting local food systems, improving access to nutritious food, and enhancing the capacity of national institutions to manage emergency responses. The agency emphasized the importance of partnerships with the Moroccan government and local NGOs to ensure the program's effectiveness.
This initiative comes as Morocco continues to face challenges related to climate change, including recurrent droughts that affect agricultural production and rural livelihoods. The WFP's strategy is designed to be flexible and adaptive to these evolving risks.
