Red Square, a popular nightclub on Courtenay Place in Wellington, closed its doors permanently on May 9, 2026, after 15 years of operation. Owner James Hurst announced the closure, citing a desire to spend more time with his children.
Originally opened in 2011, Red Square began as a cocktail bar with a lounge vibe and a pool table. Over the years, it evolved into a full-fledged nightclub with DJs, strobe lights, and large speakers, becoming a staple of Wellington's nightlife.
Hurst, who also owns other venues in the city, said the decision was difficult but necessary for his family. The bar's final night featured a farewell party, drawing regulars and staff who celebrated its legacy.
