NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 26 β Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has claimed that several senior opposition figures from the Mt Kenya region are quietly reaching out to secure a pathway back into President William Rutoβs political camp ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a political rally in Nyeri County on Friday, Waiguru stated that these leaders, whom she did not name, have been making overtures to Ruto's allies in recent weeks. She described the moves as an attempt to realign with the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition after previously supporting opposition leader Raila Odinga in the 2022 election.
βThere are those who were in the opposition, but now they are looking for a way back. They are reaching out to us, asking how they can come back to the government,β Waiguru said, as reported by local media. She added that the government is open to dialogue but cautioned that any return must be based on genuine commitment to development.
The claims come amid shifting political alliances in the Mt Kenya region, a key voting bloc. President Ruto, who hails from the Rift Valley, has been working to consolidate support in the area, which largely backed Odinga in 2022. Political analysts note that such realignments are common in Kenya's pre-election period, but no specific names or evidence have been provided to support Waiguru's assertions.
Opposition leaders have not publicly responded to Waiguru's remarks. The article is based solely on her statements and has not been independently verified by other sources.
