Spain's far-right party Vox has called for a re-examination of Morocco's role as co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, following a similar request from the left-wing party Sumar. The move adds political pressure on the Spanish government regarding the joint bid with Morocco and Portugal.
According to Spanish media reports, Vox's spokesperson in Congress, Pepa Millรกn, said on August 6, 2026, that the government must "reconsider" Morocco's participation due to "serious violations of human rights" in the country. This echoes a proposal made by Sumar in July 2026, which urged the government to condition its support on Morocco's compliance with international human rights standards.
The 2030 World Cup is scheduled to be held primarily in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with centenary matches in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The bid was officially confirmed by FIFA in December 2024, and the tournament is set to run from June 8 to July 21, 2030.
Neither the Spanish government nor FIFA has publicly responded to the calls. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued a statement as of August 7, 2026. FIFA's regulations typically prohibit political interference in the hosting of its events.
The controversy highlights ongoing debates about human rights in Morocco, particularly regarding Western Sahara, and could complicate the preparations for the first World Cup to be held across three continents.
