Hanoi Medical University Hospital announced on July 29, 2026, the successful completion of Vietnam's first penis transplant using an organ from a brain-dead donor. The surgery, which took place earlier in July, involved a 31-year-old male patient who had lost his penis in an accident.
The transplant team, led by Dr. Nguyen Hoang Phuc, reported that the patient is recovering well and has regained urinary function. The donor was a 27-year-old brain-dead individual whose family consented to organ donation. The procedure lasted approximately 8 hours and involved microsurgical techniques to connect blood vessels and nerves.
This milestone follows similar transplants in other countries, including the United States and South Africa. The hospital stated that the patient will require long-term immunosuppressive therapy to prevent organ rejection. The success of this surgery opens possibilities for future transplants for patients with severe genital injuries or congenital defects.
