Federal prosecutors released video footage on Thursday showing a man attempting to storm the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, according to court documents. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old John Smith, was arrested before entering the venue.
The U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Matthew Graves, stated that Smith was armed with a knife and a can of pepper spray. The incident occurred on April 25, 2026, during the annual dinner attended by President Donald Trump and other dignitaries.
Smith faces charges of attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and assault on federal officers. He is being held without bond pending a hearing scheduled for May 15, 2026.
Security at the event was heightened following previous threats, and the suspect was apprehended by Secret Service agents before reaching the main hall. No injuries were reported.
