The municipality of Val-de-Cognac held a ceremony on March 19, 2026, to mark the National Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Algerian War and the battles in Morocco and Tunisia. The event, held at the town's war memorial, focused on honoring local standard-bearers.

During the ceremony, five flag bearers from local veterans' associations were decorated with the Medal of Recognition for Flag Bearers. This medal, established by a 2012 decree, honors the commitment of those who carry the flags of the Republic and veterans' associations during official ceremonies.

The Mayor of Val-de-Cognac presided over the event, which was attended by local officials, veterans, and residents. The ceremony included the traditional laying of wreaths, a minute of silence, and the playing of 'La Marseillaise'.

March 19 was established as a national day of remembrance in France in 2002, commemorating the ceasefire of the Algerian War in 1962. Ceremonies are held annually across the country to honor the memory of soldiers and civilians who died in these conflicts.
