Vahid Halilhodzic, the Bosnian football coach, has described his time managing the Moroccan national team as a 'real nightmare' in a recent interview. Halilhodzic, who coached Morocco from 2019 to 2022, led the team to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar but was dismissed just months before the tournament.
In the interview, Halilhodzic cited interference from the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and a lack of support as key reasons for his difficult experience. He stated that he faced constant pressure and that his authority was undermined, making it impossible to work effectively.
Halilhodzic's dismissal in August 2022 was a shock to many, as he had successfully guided Morocco to their first World Cup appearance since 2018. He was replaced by Walid Regragui, who went on to lead Morocco to a historic semi-final finish in Qatar.
The coach, who has also managed Algeria and Ivory Coast, expressed regret over how his tenure ended but maintained that he did his best under challenging circumstances. He did not elaborate on specific incidents but emphasized that the experience was deeply frustrating.
