The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF), in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), has passed out 56 personnel who completed a three-month orientation course in fisheries enforcement law. The training took place at the Marine Training School in Entebbe, according to a statement from the UPDF.
The course aimed to equip participants with skills to enforce fisheries laws and regulations, combat illegal fishing, and protect Uganda's aquatic resources. The graduates include both UPDF officers and MAAIF fisheries inspectors.
Speaking at the pass-out ceremony, officials emphasized the importance of collaboration between security forces and civilian authorities in managing fisheries. The training covered topics such as legal procedures, evidence collection, and patrol techniques.
This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal fishing on Lake Victoria and other water bodies, which has threatened fish stocks and livelihoods. The UPDF and MAAIF have conducted similar training in previous years.
