Irish Water has proposed the installation of a below-ground emergency storage tank at the wastewater pumping station in Wicklow Town. The project aims to reduce the risk of sewer overflows during heavy rainfall events, which have historically caused environmental and public health concerns in the area.
According to the planning application submitted to Wicklow County Council, the tank would have a capacity of approximately 1,500 cubic meters. It would be constructed beneath the existing pumping station site on the Murrough, a coastal area prone to flooding. The estimated cost of the project is €3.5 million.
The proposal is part of a broader investment by Irish Water to upgrade wastewater infrastructure across County Wicklow. Public consultation on the plan is open until August 15, 2026, with construction expected to begin in early 2027 if approved.
