Morocco's Ambassador to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, stated on Tuesday that UN Security Council Resolution 2797 is not just another resolution but an unprecedented political verdict and a roadmap to definitively close the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. He made the remarks during a press conference in New York.
Hilale emphasized that the resolution, adopted on October 30, 2025, reaffirms the preeminence of the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the sole basis for a realistic and lasting solution. The text also calls on all parties to engage in the political process led by the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy.
The ambassador highlighted that Resolution 2797 marks a significant shift in the UN's approach, as it no longer refers to a referendum but focuses on the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007. This plan has gained increasing international support, with over 100 countries backing it.
Hilale also noted that the resolution urges Algeria, as a key party to the dispute, to participate constructively in the roundtable process. He reiterated Morocco's commitment to a political solution based on compromise and realism, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty and territorial integrity.
