A new report from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) emphasizes the critical need to scale up innovation in agriculture to transform global food systems. The report, titled "The State of Food and Agriculture 2026," argues that technological and social innovations are essential for making food systems more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable.
These innovations, which include digital tools, biotechnology, and new business models, are seen as vital drivers for creating decent employment opportunities, particularly for youth in rural areas. The report highlights that current food systems face interconnected challenges from climate change, biodiversity loss, and economic instability, which innovation can help address.
However, the FAO and IFAD caution that benefits are not automatic. They stress the importance of ensuring equitable access to innovations, strengthening digital infrastructure, and investing in farmer education and skills training. The report calls for increased public and private investment to support research and the widespread adoption of proven solutions.
By fostering an enabling environment for innovation, the agencies contend that countries can simultaneously improve food security, adapt to environmental pressures, and stimulate economic growth through job creation in the agri-food sector.
