In a significant military leadership change during the ongoing war with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replaced his top commander, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, on February 8, 2024. Zelenskyy appointed Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The decision followed public discussions about the need for new strategies and approaches in the conflict. President Zelenskyy stated the change was necessary for a "renewal" of the armed forces. General Zaluzhnyi, who was popular with troops and the public, had led Ukraine's defense since the war began in February 2022.

The shake-up did not directly involve the dismissal of an army secretary. The Ukrainian Minister of Defence, Rustem Umerov, remained in his position following the command change. Analysts viewed the move as a major political and military recalibration as Ukraine entered its third year of full-scale war.
