UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy reaffirmed the United Kingdom's support for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara during a meeting with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita in London on April 24, 2026.
According to a joint statement, Lammy described the autonomy plan as a 'serious, credible, and realistic' basis for a negotiated solution to the Western Sahara dispute. The UK considers this plan as the only viable framework for ending the conflict.
The meeting also covered bilateral cooperation, including trade and investment ties between the two countries. Both ministers expressed commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership established under the UK-Morocco Association Agreement.
Morocco's autonomy proposal, first presented to the United Nations in 2007, would grant Western Sahara self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty. The UK's position aligns with that of several other Western nations, including the United States and Spain.
